Kim, Sang Hyun
Kim, Sang Hyun is a Korean novelist in the fantasy, science fiction, historical fiction, spy-thriller genres. He began his literary career with TAMGURU(1998), 12 volumes fantasy series with twofold structure. It’s the very first fiction featured ‘pro-gamer’ when there was no official eSports pro-gamers yet. Kim’s second novel’s Hired, SF story that takes place in the distant future and ironically reminds readers of contemporary Korea. Since then, he has broadened his field to various genres, and explored a wide variety of themes. His recent works include short story ‘The House Joker lives’ for the SF anthology with same title, spy-thriller novels Kiss a Killer, The Ghost Agent. Now he is writing a fantasy series again.
<하이어드 Hired> by Kim Sang Hyun.
This novel was first published free to read on web, then was published as four volume books. At that time, book marketers thought ‘SF’ would not sell in Korea, so labled this novel as ‘cosmic fantasy’.
In the distant future, there are psychics on Earth called transer, who can communicate with any alien race in the universe. 16 years old boy Mayrun finds out his ability by chance, and became a hired gun. This novel talks about teenager growing up, but the style is typical young adult adventure mixed up with hardboiled noir. Last part of storyline has a strong metaphor for the tragic events of modern Korea.
